Synopsis

A searching, buoyant novel about queer love, mothers and daughters, and making a life in the face of the only constant: loss.

Every story is a love story. In a Barcelona alive with Almodóvar-like energy, the love is between women: overlapping and messy attachments between friends, young lovers, mothers and daughters. As Sara’s mother dies, her daughter finds herself in bed with a new obsession. She is wracked with guilt, but the persistence of desire and the demands of the body refuse to pause for the dignified observance of another body leaving this world.

Moving between love, grief, sexuality, memory, and the difficulty of truly understanding ourselves and others, Sara’s experiences become a passage from her late twenties toward a more settled adulthood. Lyrical, intimate, and emotionally searching, X Is Where I Am is a novel about the body, loss, and the complicated ways people give themselves to one another.

About the Author

Sara Torres is an award-winning Spanish poet and novelist from Gijón. Her debut novel, X Is Where I Am, was a major literary success in Spain and won the Javier Morote Award for Best New Author. Her work explores desire, sexuality, relationships, the body, and contemporary womanhood.

About the Translator

Maureen Shaughnessy is a writer and translator from Spanish. Her work has appeared in The Paris Review, Brick, AGNI, and Asymptote. Her translations include contemporary Spanish and Latin American fiction and poetry.
