Synopsis

The narrator of Permafrost is brilliant, funny, fiercely independent, and determined to live life entirely on her own terms. Restless in Barcelona and resistant to the expectations of family, work, and conventional relationships, she moves through a series of lovers, cities, and fleeting connections while quietly carrying an intimate relationship with thoughts of death. Her sharp observations and dark humour reveal a woman searching not for happiness, but for a way of existing honestly in a world that continually asks her to become someone else.

Winner of the Catalan booksellers' Llibreter Prize, Eva Baltasar's acclaimed debut is an uncompromising exploration of desire, solitude, mental health, and female autonomy. Written with startling lyricism and emotional precision, Permafrost is both deeply unsettling and unexpectedly life-affirming. Translated from the Catalan by Julia Sanches, it launched Baltasar as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary European literature.
