Synopsis

When thirteen-year-old Gina Vitay is abruptly sent away to the austere Bishop Matula Academy, she has no idea that the move is meant to protect her from the growing dangers of wartime Hungary. Stripped of her freedom and surrounded by rigid rules, Gina rebels against the school's traditions, earning the distrust of both teachers and classmates. But as the Second World War closes in, she begins to uncover the quiet acts of courage taking place behind the academy's walls and the enduring legend of Abigail, a mysterious statue believed to answer the prayers of those in desperate need.

Part coming-of-age story, part wartime mystery, Abigail is a beautifully layered novel about resilience, friendship, sacrifice, and the small acts of bravery that shape history. Magda Szabó's masterful storytelling has made this one of Hungary's most beloved novels, weaving suspense, tenderness, and unforgettable characters into a timeless work of literary fiction.
