Synopsis

With her children grown and living lives of their own, a woman in her sixties finds herself entering an unexpected new chapter. The roles that once defined her—career woman, mother, wife—have faded, only to be replaced by another: caring for her aging mother as illness and memory begin to take their toll. As she navigates the daily demands of caregiving, she revisits childhood memories, family stories, hymns, and the oral traditions that shaped her life, discovering that love, grief, and responsibility are deeply intertwined.

Tender, lyrical, and quietly humorous, On the Other Side Is March is a moving meditation on aging, motherhood, memory, and the invisible labor of care. Set against the stark beauty of the Faroe Islands, Sólrún Michelsen's novel celebrates the resilience of women across generations while honoring the storytelling traditions that preserve both family and cultural history.
